“White Picket Fence” (Single) by Gavin Mitchell
Gavin and I have become great friends over the past few years. We collaborated on his first single as a solo artist in 2018, after he departed as front-man from pop-punk outfit Friday Giants. I wasn’t expecting the 2nd collaboration with him to be so clandestine, but this song was part of a secret game-plan to propose to his fiancé. Traditional strategies for writing and releasing music be damned, because I consider it an honor to be a part of the making of this track, nonetheless. We had to record this in secret, and in very sporadic, short sessions. Obviously, we opted to keep it super-simple production-wise, for intimacy’s sake. Seems to have been written more along the lines of his Friday Giants days; it reminded me of my own foray in the punk scene. (I am an unapologetic early Dashboard Confessional fan, but there’s enough about that for a whole other post). The song means a lot to him, and a lot to them now. I’m glad he released it for everyone else to enjoy – the message of love is universal, after all.
